Mozilla Firefox - Plugins and Extensions - Keep Tabs From Closing

SUMMARY: The "PermaTabs Mod" extension for Firefox can help keep important tabs to services such as Twitter and Gmail from accidentally being closed.

While browsing the web in Mozilla Firefox, do you often keep tabs open for sites and services such as Twitter and Gmail? If so, you may find it irritating when you accidentally close these tabs by clicking the wrong "X" button, clicking the "Close Other Tabs" menu item, etc.

With the "Permatabs Mod" add-on you can designate certain tabs as permanent so they should never close. These tabs will be marked in a different color, will not display an "X", and even the context menu will be modified so that right-clicking such a tab will show "Close tab" grayed out.

Twitter and Gmail marked via the "PermaTabs Mod" add-on in Firefox

1. Visit the following page from within Firefox:

* "PermaTabs Mod" Extension for Firefox

2. Click the "Add to Firefox" button.

3. The "Software Installation" dialog box will eventually appear. Click "Install Now" as soon as the button is enabled.

Installing the "PermaTabs Mod" extension for Firefox

4. Once the add-on has installed, click the "Restart Firefox" button. Depending on your configuration, Firefox may note that it will try to restart your windows and tabs.

Once Firefox restarts, you should notice a couple of tabs open up with different colors - these cannot be closed until you disable their permanence. Just click on a tab and press Ctrl + P to toggle its permanent state.

Several options can be configured; select "Tools" - "Add-ons", and then click the "Options" button underneath "PermaTabs Mod". These include prompting before removing a PermaTab, loading PermaTab pages on startup, altering the PermaTab color, and changing keyboard shortcuts. Note that some changes may require restarting Firefox.

Microsoft Word 2010 - Gain a Few Extra Pixels; Disable the Vertical Scroll Bar

SUMMARY: Turning off Word 2010's vertical scroll bar may make it easier to view/edit documents without having to scroll horizontally.

If you have a smaller monitor or zoom past 100% to view and edit your Microsoft Word 2010 documents, you may be forced to scroll horizontally as the entire page width cannot be viewed onscreen.

If you need just a few more pixels to keep from having to scroll through your documents horizontally, how about removing the vertical scroll bar? 1. Select the "File" tab in the Ribbon.

2. The Microsoft Office Backstage View appears. Click the "Options" button.

(Or instead of steps 1 and 2, press Alt + T, then the letter O.)

3. The "Word Options" dialog box appears. Click "Advanced" in the left pane.

4. In the right pane, underneath "Display" (you may have to scroll down), uncheck "Show vertical scroll bar".

Information Technology - Current Events in India

In a few brief decades of human history, information technology has permeated every corner of the world and every facet of the human experience. Nowhere is this phenomenon more marked than in India. India's high availability of technically trained workers, who are also multilingual, make it extremely competitive on the world economic stage. Indian Institutes of Technology are recognized for their excellence on an international scale. The Information Technology sector in India is mostly taken up by software and and services like, system integration, application development and maintenance or CADM, consulting, software testing, and internet services. Companies like Wal-Mart, Intel, Cisco, Oracle and Dell are continuing to look to India's Information Technology organizations to provide technology services.

Recent economic downturns have affected India, not unlike other parts of the globe. However, recent events make an early recovery in India's information technology companies, promising. India's largest exporter of computer software, Tata Consultancy Services, Ltd. reports a 29% increase in second quarter 2009 profits. While the profits are attributed to both new orders and cost control decisions, it is not the only firm to report results that were better than anticipated. Infosys, as well is reporting an upswing. Overall, third quarter results are up around 16 billion rupees, as compared to last year's 13 billion during the same time period. TCS plans to add 8000 employees to its rolls to meet the anticipated increased demands in the coming year. In other developments, India's Polaris Software Lab Ltd. has agreed to purchase Laser Soft Infosystems Ltd. Laser Soft provides information technology services in the banking industry. The purchase, for approximately 520 million rupees will add 600 people to Polaris' 9,000 and 40 financial institutions to Polaris' holdings. The banking technology market is predicted to experience continued near-term growth. Payment processing and other banking infrastructure and transaction systems are anticipated to lead the momentum as worldwide economic recovery continues to unfold.

Shifting technology support and consultancy services to India has proven to be a significant source of cost control for many of the world's technology companies. Mergers and acquisitions by organizations such as NASDAQ listed Cognizant with UBS India Service Centre put the world on notice that information technology resources in India are desirable assets to acquire. One such jewel in India's crown, Proteans has recently been named to Software Magazine's Software 500 list. Inclusion on this list puts Proteans on a preferred list of business partners for the world's large corporations.

Although India has experienced challenges to its status as a premier locale for outsourcing this type of work from China, The Philippines and Eastern Europe, India's superior training in, not only technology, but languages is anticipated to keep it out front of its competition. Growth in the telecommunications industry will also fuel future growth in India. The ability to distribute telecommunications capability to outlying areas of the country allows for these areas to become resources for workforce talent. Nearly no information technology advancement that has occurred in the world over the last few decades without India's involvement or influence. The future seems to predict ongoing success.

Warning - Remove the Blindfold Before Starting an Information Technology Career

It might surprise you to learn that Information Technology does not describe any particular technology field. It is a broad description that encompasses hundreds of different fields dealing with the digital storage, communication and processing of information.

Although these fields fall under the same banner of 'Information Technology' they do not necessarily have transferable skill sets. And this observation becomes significant when deciding on an Information Technology career path. Whilst entry level careers branch out into dozens of alternate paths, vertical movement between certain paths is unlikely without starting again.

Take the fields of Web Developer and Telecommunications specialist as an example. One field fall within the 'software developer' category and the other falls within the 'network' category but both fields fall comfortably within the all encompassing Information Technology career banner. Even the most experienced Web Developer would struggle to transition into a Telecommunication Specialist role because the knowledge and skills held by a Web Developer are, for the most part, not applicable to Telecommunications.

This is why entry level Information Technology career choices can be so important. Career options branch into many different directions as experience levels increase, but they are always limited by the scope of knowledge within each field. This means that if an IT student or IT graduate has a career goal in mind they should be mindful of the different paths that may lead to the objective.

Although the Information Technology industry as a whole has a prosperous future, IT students or IT graduates who wish to take advantage of emerging technologies should position their careers appropriately. Emerging technologies are a great way to fast forward a developing career because any skills shortages means less experienced candidates are given opportunities that they may have not otherwise received.

The IT industry is rife with examples of emerging technologies and skills shortages. For the record, we feel that IPV6, Unix (due to the Unix millennium bug in 2038), HTML5 and Security are emerging fields (or fields with significant potential for growth in the case of Unix and Security) to watch for in the medium to long-term future.
