Windows 7 - Disable Automatic Error / Problem Reporting


SUMMARY: Prevent Windows 7 from automatically contacting Microsoft or prompting you to contact Microsoft whenever a software / hardware / operating system error or problem is detected.


Depending on your Windows 7 configuration, whenever a problem or error is detected in software, hardware, or the operating system, a problem report may be sent to Microsoft. This way, if solutions are later available such as an updated hardware driver, you will be notified and possibly provided a download link.

For various reasons including privacy concerns, you may not wish this automatic or prompted sending of information to occur. To disable automatic checking for solutions:

1. Click the "Start" button.

2. Type "report problems".

3. Click "Choose how to report problems" when it appears.

4. The "Problem Reports Settings" window appears. Click the "Never check for solutions (not recommended)" radio button. Or, if you still occasionally want to check for solutions but always want to be prompted beforehand, click the "Each time a problem occurs, ask me before checking for solutions" radio button.

5. Click "OK" to close the window. Or, if you need to adjust this setting for multiple users, click the "Change report settings for all users" link first to display a "Problem Reporting" dialog box. Then choose your desired setting and click "OK" to close the windows.

Microsoft Word 2010 - Automatically Attach Document Properties to Printouts


SUMMARY: Attach the document filename and path, title, last saved date, number of words, and other information to the end of printouts in Word 2010.


You might find this feature useful in some situations - Microsoft Word 2010 can be configured to automatically attach a sheet of document properties to the end of all printouts. This type of information includes:

* Document file and path
* Title
* Subject
* Author
* Creation, Last Saved, and Last Printed Date
* Number of Pages, Words, and Characters

The following screen shot shows a sample, and below that are instructions for turning this option on:

1. Select the "File" tab in the Ribbon.

2. The Microsoft Office Backstage View appears. Click the "Options" button.

(Or instead of steps 1 and 2, press Alt + T, then the letter O.)

3. The "Word Options" dialog box appears. Click "Display" in the left pane.

4. In the right pane, underneath "Printing options", check "Print document properties".

5. Click "OK" on the bottom-right of the dialog box to close it.

Microsoft PowerPoint 2010 - Leave the Text, Take the Formatting (Away)


SUMMARY: Have you tweaked the formatting of a section of text inside a PowerPoint 2010 presentation to the point it is unusable? Quickly remove all formatting while keeping the text intact.


So you've tweaked and tweaked and tweaked a block of text in a Microsoft PowerPoint 2010 presentation by adding reflections, glowing effects, shadows, texture fills, and more. What if you don't like the results and want to return it back to normal, and repeatedly pressing CTRL + Z doesn't work because you've gone past the number of undos PowerPoint 2010 allows? How do you quickly remove all text formatting?

The first step (and depending on your tweaks, perhaps the only one required) is to apply the Clear All Formatting tool. Highlight the offending text and either:

A. Select the "Home" tab in the ribbon, then click the "Clear All Formatting" button in the "Font" section (see the screenshot to the right).

OR

B. Press CTRL + SPACE

Unfortunately, if you've applied the 3-D Rotation or Transform effect on the text, the "Clear All Formatting" tool will not remove this. Here's how to clear WordArt effects:

1. With the text still selected, click the "Format (Drawing Tools)" tab in the Ribbon.

2. In the "WordArt Styles" section, click the "Quick Styles" button if it appears. Otherwise, you should see a group of letter A's. Next to these should be a down pointed arrow with a line over it - click it. See the screenshot to the right.

2. A pop-up appears with a variety of WordArt styles. At the bottom, click "Clear WordArt".

Mozilla Firefox - Plugins and Extensions - Go Crazy Tweaking / Configuring Firefox


SUMMARY: The "Configuration Mania" extension opens up the ability to configure many previously-hidden Firefox options via a GUI interface.

The "Configuration Mania" extension allows you to configure many Firefox settings in a familiar windows-based setting. Adjust Browser, Security, UI, Add-ons, and Debug properties, tweaking options such as the delay before enabling location/URL Bar autocompletion, adjusting how long download alerts should appear, changing the User Agent string reported to websites, and enabling advanced debugging options.

3. The "Software Installation" dialog box will eventually appear. Click "Install Now" as soon as the button is enabled.

4. Once the add-on has installed, click the "Restart Firefox" button. Depending on your configuration, Firefox may note that it will try to restart your windows and tabs.

5. Once Firefox has restarted, to run the utility, click the "Tools" menu, selecting "Configuration Mania".

As with any tweaking, note that making changes can have unintended consequences that may make Firefox crash or become unstable! All configuration changes are made AT YOUR OWN RISK.
